Mad Tom IPA from Lakes of Muskoka Cottage Brewery in Bracebridge, Ontario

NOTES: Draught at Woolwich Arms in Guelph. I didn’t have my camera/phone on me so you get a banner instead, sorry. Clear orange with a very creamy super-white head. Nose is floral and citrus but quite light. I was really blown away by the taste however! Definite grapefruit without tasting like cascade hops. Not to say they weren’t used (I don’t know) however many beers that use cascade hops taste like cascade hopes, which tastes like grapefruit. This however tasted like grapefruit, not cascade. Made sense? Anyway, taste was also floral with a slight bitterness in the finish. 6.7% ABV is well hidden and not typical for an American Pale Ale (APA) style, however I wouldn’t call this an IPA either. Overall very drinkable. I’m sooooo glad my meeting got cancelled so I was able to have a second pint!

I’m totally blown away how good this is. I honestly thought this wasn’t going to work, but the cranberries give a very nice tart finish and totally surprised me. It’s really the only cranberry to this, the rest is chocolate, a lot of chocolate. But not super sweet, maybe because of the cranberry. It’s super black with a tan cap that’s pretty much gone half way through. It’s a bit thin in the body I must say, but it definitely makes it easy to finish the entire bottle. I will be getting a couple of more before they’re gone!

NOTES: Without a doubt the pick of the 5 pack! Pours to a very very dark ruby brown, almost black. Again a beautiful thick creamy head. Smells roasty, malty and sweet caramel. Taste is caramel and chocolate, mostly malt with a bit of hop. Quite heavy and complex for a Brown Ale, although not too complex overall. Again I’d love to try this on tap!

NOTES: Pours to a rich amber colour. Beautiful white fluffy head. Smelt of sweet bread and a bit of malt. Caramel in the taste, as well as malty bread and a bit of grain. Hop lingers nicely on the back end. Might be just a tad too sweet, but overall you could drink this all night. I will be looking for this on tap sometime to see how it translates, which I expect will be well.

NOTES: Pours cloudy yellow with no head whatsoever. Smells of tangerines and wheat. The taste is extremely sweet. Tangerines mostly. Thin body. I’m actually surprised they didn’t use any orange peel in this, that’s how much orange you can taste.

NOTES: Pours crystal clear gold with a quickly disappearing head. Smell and taste was of sweet malts. The maltiness lingers quite a long time after. Not too bad at all! The marcobrewers could take a tip or two from this - simple but nice!

NOTES: Pours clear yellow gold. White head skims the top. Smells hoped and kinda acidic. Taste is of strong hops and grapefruit, well strong for a light beer that is.
